Christie on Friday will receive a Points of Light award in Washington from the volunteer service organization whose founding was inspired by former President George H.W. Bush.

The Points of Light organization honors individuals and organizations for volunteer and public service.

The governor was cited for working with governments, businesses, nonprofit and faith groups to respond quickly to the disaster, and for engaging thousands of volunteers in the effort.

The organization's name comes from the 1989 inaugural address by the first Bush president, when he described Americans serving each other as "a thousand points of light."
