On Tuesday thousands of residents attended Light Up New Jersey events across the shore, hosted by Townsquare Media. Attendees at twelve different locations across the shore, from Atlantic City to South River, simultaneously lit up flash lights at 6:30 pm to commemorate the state’s triumph over adversity from Sandy.

Attendees at Seaside Heights braved a cold evening, numerous people pointed out the importance of being at the commemoration.

“We’re here because we’re part of it, we were in it.” says one resident of nearby Bayville.

After a seemingly endless recovery, the one year mark seemed to come out of nowhere for many.

“It’s gone so fast, it’s amazing how quickly time has gone by. We’ve come a long way but there’s still a lot of work to be done.” says one attendee.

However for a Seaside Heights family who only recently was able to move back home, the past twelve months have been the longest of their lives.

“It’s been very trying for all of us, we’ve had to deal with contractors, electricians, everybody getting together, and holdups. We still feel very compassionate for people not in their homes.”

Numerous people in attendance say they want to see more people returning home and the boardwalk rebuilt again.
