There will be plenty of people yawning and rubbing their eyes at work or school today because they stayed up until well after 1am to watch the 12-12-12 concert from Madison Square Garden.

(L-R) Chief James Samarelli of the Seaside Heights Fire Department and Chief Tommy Boyd from the Seaside Heights Police Department wave to the crowd during the 121212 concert (CBS)

If you did you saw and heard comedian Jon Stewart take a moment to praise the work of Chief Tommy Boyd and the Seaside Heights Police Department along with Chief James Samarelli and the volunteers that make up the Seaside Heights Fire Department.  It was a nice touch and helped localize the concert for those of us in this area.

Having known Boyd since he was a little kid there is no doubt that Seaside Heights is more than just the town he works in…it’s where his heart and soul is.  The Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School in town is named after his father, who was both my 6th grade teacher and Principal.  Hugh or “Junie” was he was known along with his brothers John and Joe ran the Seaside Heights Beach Patrol for decades and as like all the other male members of the Boyd family, Tommy was a lifeguard as a teenager.

None of us who know him were surprised he would end up on the police department and rising to the ranks of chief was almost a foregone conclusion.

By the way Seaside Heights is getting back on its feet rather quickly and next Wednesday (December 19th) a holiday tree lighting ceremony will be held on the front lawn of Borough Hall.  It will be a bit different than most as it will take place at noon and all residents and business owners are invited to attend with festivities to include the tree lighting, light refreshments and a special appearance by Santa Claus.

The event was put together to show that Sandy may have battered the town but can’t stop them from enjoying the holiday season.

You know it’s Christmas because there are TV ads for the different verities of the Chia pet and Folgers coffee is running that commercial with the son returning home for the holidays who wakes his parents up with the smell of fresh-brewed coffee.
